North Coast Sound
is 2500 square feet, most of which is used by the studio itself. We
also have a kitchen area available to clients and a small shop used by
Boyd Guitars. Here is the floorplan as well as a few pictures of the
different areas of the studio. There are four isolation
rooms plus the main control room. The big room is over 800 square feet
and can accomodate large groups. The drum room is about 200 square feet
and also houses the Hammond M100 organ. There are two smaller booths on
each side of the control room. The one on the left is setup primarily
for vocals and has very little reverb. The one on the right is used for
an extra amp closet and some stand and cable storage. The ceilings are
12-13 feet in all rooms. The control room is 220 square
feet and is symetrical within a quarter of an inch. The acoustics are
controlled by two large floor-to-ceiling bass traps in the rear corners
and a large diffusor centered on the rear wall. 703 glass panels are
used to soften up some of the forward corners and ceiling reflections. The
main console is a 56x8 Mackie. The primary recording formats are 1 inch
16 track analog tape and 16 tracks on the ADAT XT20s. For automation
and editing, we use a Sonar digital audio workstation with Aardvark
Aark 24 convertors. Sonar can be synced to both the analog tape machine
and the ADATs and also provides extensive MIDI capabilities. The ADATs
can also be synced to the analog deck. The Aardvark convertors also
provide the house Word Clock when needed. The integration of these
tools allows a great deal of power and flexibility meeting the
requirements of different types of projects. Below is a layout of the studio. Click on the rollovers in the layout to pop-up images of the facility.
(This information is for the facility we built in Portland, Oregon off
Macadam. Unfortunately, it's no longer available. So far the Dallas
office is a bit more humble....)
